The HSCV Board of Directors is seeking a passionate, motivated, self- starter who aligns with our values and philosophy to serve as full time Executive Director of the HSCV. The desired qualities include Financial and Business acumen working in a not-for-profit world, exceptional communication skills, grant writing, flexibility, multitasking and experience working with volunteers.
The Executive Director (ED) is the public face of Hospice and the team leader of the organization. The ED administers and oversees all planning, operations and activities of the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley (HSCV) which serves communities in the Columbia Valley. A key component of the job is liaising with a variety of stakeholders including Local Governments, First Nations, Businesses and more.
The ED reports directly to the HSCV Board of Directors through the President of the Society and committees of the Board to ensure the smooth running of the organization.
Provides support and administrative assistance to the Board.
Education & Experience:
- A wide range of educational and professional backgrounds will be considered, however a post-secondary degree is required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in managing a not-for-profit society.
- Demonstrated experience required for fundraising/fund development, marketing, event management, advocacy and community image/awareness.
- Demonstrated experience and excellence in financial management.
- Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of hospice care and the needs of the dying their families and the bereaved is an asset; training will be provided.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the General Manager, administering and overseeing all planning, operations and activities of the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley. The (HSCV) provides community-based End of Life Support, Bereavement Support and Public Education for both municipal and rural needs.
The ED is responsible for the efficient and effective management and support for the HSCV programs and volunteers in adherence to policies and strategies developed by the Board.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports directly to the HSCV Board of Directors through the President of the HSCV Board of Directors.
Work Environment & Hours:
Full time 37.5 hours/week average, salaried position. Works in an office environment with some local and regional travel required.
Daily hours are flexible and required to be consistent with the business needs of the Organization. Works closely with the Board of Directors, staff of the organization, local and regional care partners.
Professional Development: The ED will be supported in opportunities to develop professionally in the field of Management, administration and hospice care through workshops, conferences and professional publications.
Responsibilities:
- Public Relations and Community Awareness – Develops and implements a workplan to meet strategic objectives. Represents the Society with a consistently strong, positive image This includes networking and information sharing within the hospice sector and informing community, politicians, stakeholders and decision-makers on all levels of the needs and concerns of HSCV, and about hospice care issues in general.
- Financial- Submits to the Board for approval an annual budget. Ensures monthly reports are provided as well as any special reports that may be required by the Board. Ensures all records comply with the standards of the CRA to maintain the National Charitable Status. Liaise regularly with the Accountant.
- Human Resources Management – Hire, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers. Ensure that operational policies are followed. Works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Fundraising – Participates in all major fundraising events at the direction of the Board. Researches and applies for applicable grants. Actively pursues creative fundraising opportunities.
- Programs- Oversees programs including: Navcare, Vigils, Grief Counselling and more. Commits to completing End of Life training.
- Works with the Board of Directors and all committees of the Board to ensure the smooth
running of the organization, and that the organization is in alignment with the Vision and Mission. Provides support and administrative assistance to the Board.
Education & Experience:
- A wide range of educational and professional backgrounds will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in managing a non-profit society and/or a program in the helping professions as well as relevant Post Secondary education.
- Demonstrated experience in grant writing, fundraising/fund development, event management, advocacy, and community image/awareness.
- Experience in creating Budgets and management of Society Finances.
- Demonstrated experience with successful organizational administration and human resources.
- Demonstrated experience in successfully working with community stakeholders at the executive level.
- Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of hospice care and theneeds of the dying, their families and the bereaved is an asset.
- Completion or a commitment to complete an End of Life Training program.
- Knowledge and/or demonstrated experience working with Governance Boards.
- Proven experience in successfully working with Volunteers.
